Wheel bearings

Hey guys,

We're complete newbies and in need of some help...!

Could you give us a global idea what it costs to change both front end bearings... (having a bit of trouble with a local garage), and rearrange the brakes so that they don't give too much play in the brake pedal.

More so, do beaings have a bearing on brakes?

hello and welcome

bearings available from GSF and the Brake discs too

discs are about £18
and bearings are about a £8 for inner and outer.
you need to tell them your year as the discs, pads, calipers, and outer bearings changed after '85 I think.

easy job to do
wheel off
caliper off
bearing off
disc off
inner bearing off

takes about an hour

Brake pedal travel is about a third of the way down on mine then the pedal is firm

nope I can't think of any.

Don't use GSF wheel bearings, they are rubbish.
Branded as Vetech, they are GSF's own brand sourced in the far east and will last about a month if you are lucky.

Thanks for the tip Simon, we got the bus back yesterday and the bearings have stopped singing. Let's hope the garage used the right make...

If bearings don't last, buy them from Baxter at Brickwerks. His parts are quality and so is his service!!

So do you need to change the wheel bearings each time you change brake discs?

No...the bearings can be re-used (clean in petrol, blow out with air if you have it, re-pack with high melting point LM grease and re-use with new inner seal)

OK thanks for this info, I was not sure if the wheel bearings were pressed into the hub of the brake disc, so changing the seals is far cheaper, as the wheel bearings sound ok. Will clean out and repack with the grease you advised, thanks.

"Singing" front end is not from the bearings... its normally from pads not retracting from the disc, most often caused by the rear brakes being over adjusted and not allowing the system to "relax"..

T25's dont have an "instant" brake pedal like modern cars... they actually need a press to make them work rather than the slight touch of a modern vehicle...

As said... Get some bearings from Brickwerks as they are tested.... if you need em... Front bearings can be adjusted also.. and require a small amount of play when cold...

Yes if the bearings are slack the disc will move and will push the pads back.

Not wanting to hi-jack too much. We just had new brake pads at the back and noticed singing from the front on our first trip afterwards. Sounds like the brakes need a little adjustment?

don't you have to press the bearings out in order to grease them and put back in, they will need a bearing press tool.

Front? if so all you have to do is remove the inner bearing seal and both the taper bearings will fall out (leave the bearing races in situe) not wanting to sound to critical but we are talking brakes/steering, so unless you feel completly confident then these bearings are best left to the experts....it's just that you sound pretty clueless and this is one of those things that can be dangerous if done incorrectly.
