electrical help needed

Post by Damien »

Right firstly im a newbie to these wedges but know my way around most car electrical things quite well. Just got my van, its a 1982 panel van with a 2 litre Aircooled lump. I've had a look at the wiring diagrams in the haynes manual i got with it but im lost.

Its failed MOT on amonst others the indicator tell tale not working and fog lights not working. i've had a look at the electrics and at some point it has had a immobiliser fitted and then half removed. I decided to remove the whole dash and have a good look. I have removed the rest of non original wiring and reconnected wires where needed, but have some wires that have been cut off before that now go nowhere.

Coming down from the passengers side a pillar:

thin-ish blue wire- think this is from the switch for interior light, where should it go to?
medium thickness red wire- has a spade terminal that looks like it should be connected to fuse box somewhere.....
thick-ish grey wire- cut off quite short not a clue on this one...

On the drivers side by hot air vents:

medium thick brown
mediun thick white with blue tracer
medium thick red wire

*these were just taped together behind the dash*

Anyhone know what any of these could be?

Can't help you with the ones coming down the a-pillar, but the ones by the vent sound like they may be the original wires for the stereo:-

red - live
brown - earth
white / blue - radio illumination feed

Hope that helps a bit :)

Ok that may help, none of them have any power even with the ignition switched on. One of the wires going up a pillar is connected to nothing and i think the other 2 are for the door switches for the alarm.

Just had another look at it and when the ignition is on and you turn headlights on the indicator tell tail light is constantly illuminated and fuel gauage and oil temp gauge shoots up to max and oil light flashes. The guy i got it from has had the guages replaced recently as the speedo didn't work, What the blithering heck has he done? Its like all the wire go to the wrong places.

i would look at the multiplug on the base of the clocks the plastic pcb can cause no end of probs if theres a dry joint there. i would try another set of clocks before i went much deeper.

Right just checked the 14 pin multiplug on the end of loom and all is well there. PCB has no obvious problems, what i did notice was although the plug fits the clocks all the connections are in different places as they are labelled on PCB.

I take it the clocks are the wrong type. Would answer most of my questions.

Test with multimeter, put black lead on metal chassis and positive on wire your concerned about. Then if you suspect it, for example an indicator light .. switch the indicator on and see if you get a voltage. If you suspect it to be a negative do a contiuity test to the - on the battery etc... IF your still stuck continuity test from the wire to the fuse box.. look it up on the haynes.

I've gone through the wiring diagram in the haynes manual and checked with my multimeter, haynes was not a lot of good as not all wire colours match. Think i have all the wires where they should be but nothing matches up with dash connection.

you've got a dead short circuit in the wiring loom so check all the earth points and clean them, its also possible that the wire with a spade end is an earth,im reading from a haynes 79-82 manual, hope this helps mate :?

I have the 79-82 haynes manual, but wire colours dont match up to what i have on 14 pin terminal. I've now cleaned up all the earths etc. I think i have the wrong clocks. Have managed to get the main beam light working, the indicator one works but only with the indicators not the hazard lights.

Right got most of lights working to get it through the MOT, only one left is the blue main beam warning light. I've not got a wiring diagram for the later vans, can someone tell me which pin is for main beam light on 14 pin terminal on later watercooled variety?

Hopefully i can replace all the brake pipes over the weekend and get him on the road!
