td or tdi?

Post by jebiga41 »

hi have the choice of a 1z mtdi with a modified gtd pump or an AAZ which I could tune to get the extra bhp and torque out of. (Am going to uprate the clutch and also have an oil cooler to fit)Which would in your opinion would be the better conversion to go for regards usability, price, power output although would imagine they would be about the same when both properly tuned. also with regards to the AAZ conversion which turbo would people recomend the JX KKK or the AAZ one? Also does anyone have any suggestions regards to charge coolers? thanks in advance paul

What engine have you got at the mo??
Factor in a gearbox rebuild in any case... and IIRC the 1z will prob need gearing changes, so factor in some more cash for those when box being done....

AAZ on standard TD gearing should be ok I think.... with lots more power might be a little short....

AAZ is highest revving of all vw diesels so standard gearing fine, as simon points out tdi needs higher gears.

thanks guys, was figuring the gearbox would come into it with the tdi am running a 1y with 15" mefros on a syncro so should be able to get away with the AAZ without modifing the gearbox for the mo. Not going to be doing the transplant for a while so adopting the eat an elephant approach, bit by bit :) Get the engine in, look at the gearbox and diff later and tuning plus a few other mods on the syncro when my bank balance can afford it. will fit the uprated clutch, oil cooler, oil pump, water pump, new mounts, belts and pulleys ,rover pin, crankhead bolts, seals, levers etc all the aaz stuff most of it have collected already am stil confused about which is the the better turbo to use tho aaz or jx, kkk or garret ?

Remeber TDI's are much noisier and the heaters less efficient.

Less efficient heater also means lower coolant temp and lower oil temp

got an oil cooler and the lower temp thermostat from MrBaxter so shouldn't be a problem also will eventually chargecool so temps will be low us just got to start stripping the aaz and building it up, and getting the neccesary clutch parts, get the tdi flywheel machined to size etc

I am a big fan of AAZ's but they all get hot in the back of these vans, tdi's run very cool
