Re: newb saying hello, some questions
I'm not giving up, found a schenatic for an 87 so I'll go at her next warm day.
I was in the JLC friday working, got to check out the trucks up close. the beer sounds good after another 12 hour shift, but I need my rest more.
If you are in ontario, you should look into jeepkings.ca we have a local club called independent offroad, weekly meets at caseys on wednesday nights.

it's a small world
I did find the o2 sensor missing. I know how much these units rely on the sensors, would it start without it? I should be getting some fuel I tought

Re: newb saying hello, some questions
if the lambda is disconnected the ecu will run in limp map mode, should start and run and be driveable, but a bit down on power and fuel economy, as long as the lambda signal wire is totally insulated and no stray siganl or earth contact is being made.
There's a good dignostic procedure in the bentley manual which is also summarised in a us document that's available for download on vanagon group , vw driveability manual etc...http://www.loam.org/vw/Vanagon/VanagonP ... ivability/ etc..
there's masses of stuff on american sites just google vanagon driveability there will be other sources too

Re: newb saying hello, some questions
still no start, changed the oil, cleaned all the grounds I could find
I disconected the fuel pum and tried to start it on propane so I wont faul the plugs, coughs once in a while, not very encouraging.
If you can't start the engine, how can you make sure timing is right? I pulled the plug and checked it to TDC and aligned it but I might be out 10 degrees either way

Re: newb saying hello, some questions
hello. sounds like your having fun with your new van. was interesting reading your story. Im looking into getting one myself and have my eye on a van i fear could be in a similar state and needs converting from an ambulance and once i've got a fully working van i fully intend to drive it to every corner of the globe setting off in september so need to start very soon i'm not sure how much it costs to fix and how hard is to find and all the syncro parts bit i think it will be worth its weight on the trip. how much has your repair bill come to or will i be better off paying a lot more for a newer van, the cheaper it is the more money i will have for fuel along the way. thanks for any help and hope everything works out for you Craig & Claire.

Re: newb saying hello, some questions
Mmmm
Are the leads on in the right order?? (No really... check again, check against the book... its been done lots before...)
Its a hell of a task.. jumping into a Syncro if you know little about them.. very steep learning curve...
Gearbox.. shifter disconnected!!! locked rear wheels... prop and drive shaft removed... MMM I am guessing it could have suffered the usual synchro ring colapse.. this can give those sysmptoms.... = $$$$...
Craig and Claire
No idea what your budget is, but getting a non working van and doing it up isnt going to be cheap.. then you really need to put some miles on it to iron out any issues... IMHO you need to look for a better van.. or get someone that really know syncro's to do a lot of the work...
September 2010 I presume you mean... Sept 09 is far too close....

Re: newb saying hello, some questions
As for the budget we are looking around 4000 but it can be bent a little. Just wondering how much work it is to fix one so we know if we would be better spending less and the rest on the repairs / conversion
This is one of the better vans we were looking at
https://club8090.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=46670" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
But it needs some work doing to convert to a camper but the mileage is low so should be ok mechanically.
Not sure about the 4wd side of life and if it's going to becoming more hindrance than help?
And I've never driven a synco before how will it cope on the longer motorway stints?
Have been keeping my eye out for some time but have only recently started looking to buy one as we were thinking about the train plain options too, we have been looking around the ordinary t25 but think our trip is going to mostly be off the trodden path so 4wd will help but then I'm also thinking if we are in a remote part of the world and something goes wrong how will we ever get the parts needed if they are more scarce than normal.
The trip starts sept 09 but we are working a winter ski season first after a few weeks grape picking and October fest so if we don't pick a van till spring then it's not the end of the world as it will only rot in the snow or get left at home in the rain for a few months.
We have a route and list after list of ting that we want to see and do. Mostly priced up and saved for, daily budgets and so on so all we need now is to find a van kit it out have a good few test runs then we are free.
We also considering starting the trip in a faraway place flying there looking round till we find a van then driving it from there if this option is going to be better value for money.
Sorry if it's a little long winded,
How's your van looking these days, like the look of your van and the fun your having in the photo but Claire has already told me that unless we are trying to escape the Taliban under no circumstances will I be allowed to drive like that with her onboard unless I like walking a lot.
