Starting problems - click click nothing!

Post by Russonly »

Okay, I seem to have a starting problem. Seems to be both cold and hot.

This morning I turned the key - got a click - light went out - turned key - another click - and nothing

Tried it again - second click - short delay of about half a second then it turned over.

It did the same again this evening.

Got back home (after about 25 miles). Stopped the van and tried to start it again after about half an hour.

turned the key - got a click - light went out - turned key - another click - and nothing

Repeated and nothing again and again and again. Will bump start though!

Any idea's? Battery was 12.5V last time I looked but am going to check it again!

Cheers

Take the cowl of steering column and next time it does it wiggle the connector at the back of the ignition switch

Not a definitive answer but worth trying as it sorted mine :ok

Here is a good list from Martin 'Red Westie' :ok
well I'll give you a list:
Poor earth points (everything should be free from corrosion, tight and in good condition)
Loose battery terminals (check the obvious first)
Poor solenoid feed /corroded terminal (pull off the spade connector to check and clean)
Poor braided earth cables (easy to see and rectify)
Copper braided wire between solenoid and starter motor corroded (seen this loads of times)
Worn out starter brushes (also common)
Starter armature support bearing/bush (if it hasn't got a supporting nose cone) doesn't normally cause a delay in starting..rather a slow turn over.
faulty battery (not convinced)
Faulty ignition switch (very common)
These are the common ones....

Okay, I 've been investigating it some more after another long journey and another none start. Seems to only really do it on long journeys.

I've noticed that the battery has leaked through the top holes. The "screws" did not seem to be in very tightly fitted. Why would this happen?

I have a 1.6 D, the alternator is 65A, the battery is 60AH (P.No.075)

The output of the alternator is 13.76V constantly - tickover and reving! I expect the the regulator is buggered. Could this be the cause.

I don't want to buy a new battery if it is going to happen again! Can I top up the battery?

Hope someone out there can understand this and help! :ok :ok :ok
