Fridge won't light!

Post by meggles »

Hope this is the right forum 'cos it's a technical issue. :ok
Electrolux 2 way fridge: Was working on gas (don't know about 12v electric). Ran out of gas, gas bottle replaced. Now, when trying to light, all I can get is a small "pop" as the small amount of gas ignites at the pilot. The pilot does not light up however. (By that, I mean it doesn't stay on!). Any ideas please.
BTW, can't find the answer on WIKI.

Keep trying! Might just be some air in the gas line and needs to be 'chased out' by the new gas.
Of course... If you've been trying to light it for the last 4 hours then it just may not be this!

Don't be daft. I wouldn't spend 4 hours trying to light it! I sent the wife out for 5 hours.
Seriously though, I have had button depressed for a good 5 minutes. That should have got any air out of it!

Have you held the gas knob in for long enough to purge the pipe of air? As some gas is there it may be that.
As you are oop north is the temperature too low!(assuming that you are running on butane and not propane)
Failing that it might be time to clean the metal pipe with a blast of air as there may be some rust inside blocking your orifice!

we keep getting a similar problem with our fridge, the cause was a small lump of charcoal on the lighting element (may not be actually called this  ) where the it 'pops' at the back. its the bit that the spark touches to light the gas.
we keep having to scrape ours off on a regular basis otherwise the fridge won't light......tis worth a look

I would think from your post that the thermocouple is not in the flame and allowing the safety valve to be bypassed

Well, I cleaned the jet with an air line, blew through the gas pipe. Cleaned up as much as I could. Now it will light ok if I leave the "box thingy" (with the window in it) off the fridge, as soon as this goes back on it won't light. :?
BTW How high should the flame be? Should it be about as high as a pilot light on a domestic cooker? That's all I'm getting.

The flame is only as big as a pilot light. I'm not sure what you mean by the 'box thingy' - or why it stops it lighting, sorry.

Are you moving the thermocouple out of the flame or shorting out the sparker as you replace it?
