hello,
ive just changed over my old ct engine, for another one out of a friends shed.
everything has gone alright, apart from i have just realised that the ignition system is different.
the one i have taken out had all the electrical idle adjustment and extra wires and all that, the new one has an old conventional
system, and it all looks a bit different.
is it easy to change it all, can i bypass all the electrics and make my life a lot easier?
also, my old one had the coil on the tinware next to the dizzy, whilst the old one hasnt got a coil at all and not even any mounting holes for it.
any help would be greatfully appreciated
joe

Re: Changing 1600 ct engine
how does it drive with the conventional ignition? if it's OK then stick with it
remember to time it up to 7BTC though....
Changing it all over to the electonic stuff is easy peasy... remove all the old stuff including the coil - they are different for electronic ignition
bolt in all the electronic stuff and re-time the engine, mdg
Don't worry about the coil being mounted on the tinware or other - as long as the wires are long enough then bolt to something - mine is on the body near where the ignition amplifier if fixed on....

Re: Changing 1600 ct engine
hey thanks for reply,
havent started it yet, with changing it all over to the automatic idle and electronic stuff, do i have to change over all the dizzy and coil and everything? will it all fit and replace the conventional ignition?
thanks for your help,
joe

Re: Changing 1600 ct engine
yes you have to replace the lot as the dizzy is completely different inside - it has a different mechanical advance in there too.
The coil on an electronic system has to deal with much much higher voltages that one base on a points system
one thing many people seem to do is to ditch the idle stabilizer unit - they give trouble but never having had on on my vans I can't say what the trouble they give is
Make sure you fix the ignition amplifier unit (the part with the ally heat sink on it) to the bus as they get warm and use the body of the bus as a cooling medium
On the electronic dizzy there should be a spade connector held on by the screw for one side of the dizzy cap - connect the brown wire of the ignition loom to this
Remember to connect the ignition switch wire (black thick) one to the correct side of the coil or it will kill it before too long/give bad running
Lastly make sure the vac unit is not only the right one for the bus but it works correctly too - put a pipe on the end and suck it - it should move the rod if not fitted to the dizzy or if fitted it should rotate the innards a bit - stick your tongue on the pipe once sucked and wait a few seconds.. if the innards/rod move back then the diaphragm is dead and you'll need a new vac unit (GSF about £20.00)
Timing on an electronic 1600CT engine should be 4-6ATDC with the idle stabiliser unit disconnected and the wires that feed it joined together AND the vac pipes connected up

Re: Changing 1600 ct engine
brilliant , nice one thanks for your help,
im not too well mechanically minded(especially when it comes to electrics) but should hopefully be quite straightfoward now- will get a knowledgable friend to give me a hand!
its hopefully not gonna cost me too much more money now............
