Starter problem - what wires go where? (2.0 a/c)

Post by T25rc »

I acidentally tried to start the van in gear, which made it jump forward. When i tried to restart it wouldn't go... Just a clicking of the solenoid, quite quietly.

We found a blue wire (that comes out of a sheath with a red "fellow") which had snapped off, so assume this broke when jumping forwards. The problem is we have no idea where it goes.

There is two studs, on the first there is the big black wire and the thin red one. On the other there is an earth, the live from the ignition is on ok.

We put the red stray one on the first, tried it and nothing. So on the second and nothing again.

Where do the wires go? A picture or diagram would be brilliant... have searched.

If not, any other suggestions?

Cheers

Just looked in the Bentley manual for models to '83 and no wire coded yellow shown just Blue/Brown and a Red/Black to solenoid and all reds to Starter motor. Sorry can't offer more help than that.

Can't follow your first post,
We found a blue wire........which had snapped off......We put the red stray one on the first....etc. etc.,
and I have a waterboxer, but go to..........

http://www.club80-90.co.uk/pages/downlo ... eneral.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Then go to page 16 of 162 and there is a wiring diagram.

So that is 'Club Stuff' (top of page) ' Useful Downloads' 'Electrics-Gen' page 16 of 162.

Cheers for that, i just dont get it.

Havn't had a chance to look at it as i'm very p*ssed off and had been revising for exams,

Is there nobody that can tell me which wires go where please  ?

for reference i have:

One big black wire,
An earthing strap
A thin red wire
A thin blue wire

The last two (red and blue) come out of the same sheath.

Right... Here goes!
The thin blue wire, you will be pleased to know, has nothing to do with the starter motor. It is the alternator charging indicator wire which runs between the alternator and the connector on the back of the dashboard. It indicates when the alternator isn't charging the battery.

The 'earth' as you call it is actually the live supply into the startor motor and should run from the threaded post on the starter motors solenoid and into the startor motor itself. Sometimes these can corrode, fall apart, and prevent the power entering the motor.

The thick black cable connects to the other threaded post on the solenoid and is the permanently live supply from the battery. Your positive battery terminal has the other end connected into it.

The thinner red wire should connect onto the same post as the thick black one. This is the charging supply from the alternator to the battery.

That should just leave one you havn't mentioned which is the thin red and black wire. This connects to the spade connector on the solenoid near the two threaded posts. This cable runs from the ignition key switch and is what pulls in the solenoid to operate the startor motor.

Just thought... This earthing strap... Is it near the gearbox mounting? If so it should be connected to the chassis and the gearbox, linking the two.
Just a thought if this was the earth strap you were talking about and not the one on the startor motor. :D
