Yeah owned a Syncro for a few years now but until now I have done 6 tyre rotations as they were all even when I bought the vehicle then replaced them all at the same time. The van I have just bought has 5 wheels and the spare has never been on. The difference between the spare and the road wheels is about 5mm (They are Dueler MT so have tons of tread depth). I didn't know what transmission wind up was exactly but now I know why I can see why you don't do it. If I'd actually just thought about how the Visco works I probably would have realised it myself.
When I have the money coming back in I will invest in a new set of rubber. The tyres on it just now are too big and sometimes foul when on the bumpy stuff.

If you are gonna replace all 5 in the future anyway, have the spare shave down 5mm - cost me a fiver last time - need to find a tyre place with a "buffer" - from memory it was a piece of kit used in truck tyre remoulding - literally spins the tyre and "buffs" the top layers off. Believe they also use such methods for Karting tyres to take that greasy initial surface off.. Otherwise you have a useless spare unless you drop the prop if you get a problem!

Re: Tyre Rotation
What's all this about? If you replace a punctured tyre with the spare and it happens to be a few mm larger / smaller that the rest of the tyres, how will it affect the VC? The diff will take care of the difference and it wont affect the VC at all. Sit down there now and think carefully about it - but first understand how and why a diff works. The VC will be affected when a single axle is running at a different speed to the other not a single wheel otherwise the VC would be knackered in no time by simply going around bends. If this is not the case then why would VW only offer one spare wheel?
