Temperature guage not registering

I have a 1.9 dg engine. My temperature guage doen't register at all. if I cross the wires from the sender unit under the thermostat I can hear the relay unit? in the control panel box (top left of engine bay)clicking. Any other checks I can do before assuming the guage is faulty? I've been told there is a second sender unit on these engines. Is this the case and if so where is it?

BUMP, interested in knowing this too, stopped working last night for some reason not had chance to have a proper look yet, but I dont fancy newquay next week without it

Sender that you need to short circuit is the one facing the front cab, sounds like you are shorting the one that engages the relay for the manifold heating elements.

Yes, fitted on the thermostat housing.

You really need to get under the van to access temp gauge sender .

I had this problem see my thread, lots of excellent help from Angelo & Grun.
