Crunching gearbox & oil on the drive?

Hi guys and gals,we recently came back from a week in wales,which was evenful on the way home,basically when say,you stop at a junction and try and get first it grinds and crunches but will not go into gear,so i try to get it into 2nd and with a little crunching it goes in and once were going along there is no problem with the other gears,and i cant remember any clutch slip,but dont hold me to that,il let you know.
Anyway we nipped in halfords when we got home and when we came out there was a 6 inch diameter puddle of oil on the floor of the car park,so we limped back home(about 1.25 miles) and when we got ot on the drive it was leaking a little bit of oil from the join of the bell housing and the engine,but not a lot,its not from the gearbox drain plug or the sump plug,and obviously we havent used it since,any ideas?

By the way its an 1982 2.0l Aircooled

Is it sweet stinky thick gear oil or engine oil on the drive?

Was the clutch dragging the problem (could you change easily once underway by synhronising revs without the clutch?)

Hi harry,im not sure what type of oil it is,its quite black if that helps?
And as soon as its in 2nd and so on its fine,dont have to concentrate on anything,just change gear normally?
