Service & Parts in London

Post by wardandy »

Can anyone recommend somewhere in London, preferebly south-west London, where

a) I can get my fridge serviced, it needs a new spark for the gas.
b) I can get an engine service
c) I can get a new roof vent. I have found a couple of online shops but does anyone know of any walk in shops for camper parts and accessories?

Cheers

What van is it ? Servicing one of these is actually fairly simple. All you need is the following:-

- A decent socket set
- A low range torque wrench (eg. Norbar's S1 or Halford's Professional small torque wrench)
- A Haynes Manual and read it thoroughly. It will save you time in the long run.

Learning how to do the servicing yourself will save you being ripped off and a lot of money in the long run.

The following places supply parts (I can't remember them all) for the Type 2 T3:-

New Parts

- Just Kampers (avoid oil seals)
- VW Heritage
- GSF Car Parts (only buy best quality stuff from them, avoid chinese and some brazilian parts)
- VW Classic Parts Center - http://www.vw-classicparts.de/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; You will need the ETKA CD/DVD (version 6 or version 7) for the VW part numbers. The website is also only in german, the link on how to order parts from VW Classic Parts are on this link http://www.volkszone.co.uk/VZi/showthread.php?t=548566" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
- The Bus Depot - http://www.busdepot.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; - based in Blaine, WA, USA

Second Hand Parts

- Megabug
- Brickwerks (I think they also sell some new parts at well)

Also what fridge do you have? If it's a very old Electrolux (eg. RM122) then fixing the ignitor is fairly easy. The most difficult part is removing the fridge and putting it back in again. To fix the ignitor, check all blockages within the pilot jet near the ignitor its self. Also remove all rust flakes, etc from the flue.

As for the roof vent, do you know which one it is (eg. what conversion is your van) ?. The most common ones I have seen are made by MPK and are measured by aperture size but they can be different manufacturers depending on the conversion. The best place to look for these are on eBay or your local motorhome or caravanning shop.

Steve at South London VW (They are near Ikea Croydon)

Very reliable/trustworthy - 0208 664 1111

I have used them a good few times for services and semi major engine works, not sure about the fridge though??

I dropped my van in today for a clutch kit actually, say ello to the blue bus with the white hat if you do go there soon ;)

I took my bus to South London VW to have the engine replaced, after an 18 month nightmare, i went up from Plymouth to collect it, only for it to have the original engine still in and for it not to start.

Shame as Steve seemed a nice chap, but I definitely wouldn't recommend the place.

Got home, took the bus to Dan Munday, 3 days later, new engine and other bits and pieces, been using it as a daily for over a year now :D .

Hi there - I'm also looking to get the gas & fridge serviced and my electrics checked out in London.

I TOTALLY would NOT recommend Beetlemania in Muswell Hill. I had a pre-check done on my Westy before buying it only to take it to Jacks Garage in West Lodnon for a service to be given 2 sides of A4 of things that were very very wrong with it. Needless to say I'm not best pleased about Beetlemania.

I have just booked my camper in with a guy called Chris in Redhill in Surrey. He's ACOPS certified and charges £95 to service the fridge and another £25 to check the gas generally. I've not used him before so can't say how great he is but his number is 07956 894 064 and let him know that Stuart from North London mentioned his name.
