head unit wiring

Post by armyphil »

Van passed its MOT in the week so i thought i would invest in a cd/radio to take away the hundrum of long slow driving.

Off the back of the stereo there is a iso plug full of cables i think they are Pos/Neg/Ignition and the others for speaker connections.

I am going to take the pos/neg off ghe cigarette lighter as there is no iso to just plug into. The ignitio was going to be taken off the interior fan as its all in close proximity to the head unit?

i will also be running an inline fuse from both lighter socket and fan?

Is this a viable way or are there better ?

Thanks for replies

That would work. but there should already be the wiring there for the radio.

Red (12v power), Brown (Earth), Grey with Blue Trace (Radio Illumination). If yours is a 1981 van. You would still need to connect to the ignition circuit if you wanted the radio to work through the ignition.

i have another issue now had a go at wiring but the head unit keepslosing its memory??

i hard wired a pos and eartgh from the cig lighter and another from the internal fan, There is a blue and white wire from the units loom that needed to be earthed also so i joined it into the cig lighters earth.

does this sound as i cant think of another reson why it wont store??

From memory Red is permanent live & yellow is switched / ignition live on the iso bundle. I think the "old" fix for memory loss (radio's, not mine :D ...) was to connect both red & yellow to permanent live, or on some vehicles they had to be swapped over / reversed. Some newer stereos do put quite a drain on the battery though especially if you leave a CD in it (remembering the point where you switched it off I think I read somewhere) so perhaps not ideal.
Hope this helps a bit
What a long strange trip it's been
