Van is going....

Post by albertramsbottom »

But its only running on 3 or 2!

I have replaced the coil and brought a new set of HT leads and sparkers from JK. The only problem is the leads dont appear to be long enough so two of them had to have the old ones fitted again.

Now the bloody thing isnt running very well. Now here is my question is there a way to tell what plug isnt sparking? Is it safe to run the engine (becuase it does start), and then check the ht lead against the engine block or would it be better to just pull the leads one by one of the dizzy to see if that makes a difference? I would have thought that when I get to the one or two that are not working that there would be no noticable difference when i pull them. True or not?

Also should i use a pair of pliars to pull them of the dizzy?

Cheers in advance, we will get my van going between us all

pliers & rubber gloves, unless you would like a Keegan mullet.

If it is only running on 3cyls, when you pull off a good one it will stop. the one that aint firing wont make any difference :ok

from cold start it up and run it fr about 10 seconds , switch off

the cylinder not running will have a cold exhaust!

quick easy test to start with!

might be worth mentioning when this problem started before or after the new ignition components were fitted and whether they made things worse or marginally better. As for the leads being too short - something wrong there if you ordered and JK delivered the correct ones. That's a good tip Billy, learn sommmat new every day!

Well

It broke down and when i got it back with all the old componants it wouldnt start and once i changed the coil it did and ran fine.

But I had a new set of ht leads and sparkers which I fitted today and it wouldnt run properly. So either one of the ht leads in not fitted properly or I have accidently fitted them in the wrong order.

sorry had too many bears :P

I bought a set of plug/HT leads from JK & instead of all the plug leads being different lengths like the old ones, they were all the same length & too long.

Right, heres the best I can do regards connecting in the right firing order, mines '87 1.9DG

Looking from the back, Dizzy vacuum points to front and dizzy sparkplug lead connections roughly 12 'o'clock, 3 'o' clock, 6 'o' clock and 9 o clock

so looking from the back and peering into engine bay....

12 o clock - RH side nearest you

3 - 0 clock RH side nearest flywheel

6 - o clock LH side nearest you

9 - o clock LH side nearest Flywheel

Mind you if the firing order was wrong I would expect it to back fire but never got it wrong so can't say for sure....best of luck
