My stock alternator is making noise (bearing going out), so needs rebuilt or changed. Was thinking of putting bigger one on. Any suggestions as to which is best and where to source?
Thanks,
Lloyd

Re: best alternator???
I opted for a 100amp alternator when I replaced mine the other week.
Unfortunately it was not compatible with the mounting bracket/nut/bolt combination.
The key issue was the upper righthand securing bolt has a square head that mates in the alternator body.
The 100amp alternator uses a different set up, you made need to purchase a different bracket.
I eventually fitted a standard 65amp alternator and it does the job perfectly even when running with headlights and coolbox on.
Where to source - sorry can't help there.

Thanks for that. Not sure I need higher output or if stock wiring will handle it, but thought it was worth asking.

Re: best alternator???
if you aare going to replace the stock 65a off your DG, swap it for a stock 90amp off a DJ..... the wires wont notice, but the battery will

90A is a good limit. Above that you're unlikely to find one with single V belt pulley on it (you could change the pulley but but lack of a single V on big altinators isn't conicidence (rememeber it also drives your waterpump!) and it'll probably be too big for the mountings.

Re: best alternator???
The output of the alternator is proportional to the voltage in the system, so having a bigger alternator wont necessarily make so much difference, unless the main battery is completely flat. With the small relay operated aux bat charging systems you dont get enough voltage drop across to the main battery to pump up the amps.
That said the 90 amp bosch is the best alternator on the market. Mine can kick out 70 amps at tick over

Re: best alternator???
Thanks guys.
Sounds like 90 amp is way to go. Just need to change connections on wires at alternator then?
