T25 early tailgate lock

Post by pbr »

Have recently bought T25 1981 1.6 air cooled. Came with no tailgate key and is open which means at present having to back up to a wall every time I park!

Taking the lock out the barrel number is 6388 - the keys seem N series for the other locks. I got a locksmith to cut a key but it doesnt seem to work despite soaking the lock in WD40.

Any ideas gratefully received or any ideas on a replacement early mechanism? Surfing the web I couldn't find a trader who seems to stock the early model.

Is it usual for the ignition/door keys to be different from the tailgate?

Thanks in advance,

Phil

A quick fix for this problem is to remove the said barrel and simply insert your common key as used for all the others doors on the van,,,,,,then simply file flat any protruding tumblers.

By the sound of it, it was a waste of time having a key cut,,,,,,,if you don't mind me saying so.... :o

Thanks Fritz. Actually the locksmith happened to be a friend who was just trying to help.

Any thoughts as to sourcing a lock? And whilst I'm at it the spare wheel compartment is empty - any knowledge of a breaker close to the Isle of Dogs?

I don't wish to repeate my self But

simply insert your common key as used for all the others doors on the van,,,,,,then simply file flat any protruding tumblers.

Otherwise you will still need to do the same to a newer barrel unless you have a key code for both the tumblers and the key......
