Cylinder Head bolts

Post by Dubwana »

Are the torque settings for the cylinder head really as tight as this? I feel it would split the head in half! Its for a 1.6 diesel none turbo. Anyone put one on recently

?step 1 29 ft.lbs (40 Nm)
step 2 43 ft.lbs (60 Nm)
step 3 54 ft.lbs (75 Nm)

After step 3 tighten bolts 1/2 turn futher without backing off.

Warm up engine until oil temperature reaches 50C

Tighten bolts additional 1/4 turn.

Retorque at 1000 mile service an additional 1/4 turn without backing off

Reading a volkswagon transporter -T4 pocket mechanic for a 1.9 diesel.Says four cylinder engine cylinder head bolts.1st stage 4.0kgm (29ft .1bs
2nd stage 6.0kgms(43ft.1b
3rd stage 7.5 kgms(54ft .1bs
4th stage angle tighten by 180 degrees ( or 2x90 degrees
Re-tighten in the same manner aprox 600miles .I used these figures for a 1.6td cylinder head refit its most important to use new bolts & make sure the threads in the block are clean and free of oil&water .
