running problems - backfiring- running cool (?)

Post by nrxx »

Hi again

'87 1.9 watercooled 4 speed (DG?). Started and ran fine when bought, still starts very well but now doesn't idle cleanly or pull until warm and runs lumpier. pops and bangs on overrun and VERY loud on acceleration. Can't find any exhaust leaks. Using normal unleaded and am on probably third or fourth full tank since purchase. Also noticed that engine bay smells (!) hot and temp gauge not leaving the white zone recently.
Any ideas gratefully recieved.
Thanks

Hi nrrx,

As this forum is so popular, often late night posts get swiftly buried, try bumping again mid morning.

However, I had a similar experience with my van last year. Is the auto pull down unit for choke working properly? It could be sticking on. Try starting your van without applying choke. Or check it is correctly closing the choke flap as engine warms.
