not quite James
http://partsjunction.co.uk/index.php?ma ... ucts_id=15" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
it uses the same O.A.T. technology that VW sell (G12+)
and it's phosphate free
G12+ is available from your local VW commercial van dealer
the details of mixture and quantity are in the wiki

Re: Coolant?
What you are looking for is one of the orange/red long life antifreezes based on organic acid technology and is silicate/phosphate free.
As the title implies this type of antifreeze is orange/red in colour (not dark blue or green) and as it is based on organic acid technology it lasts a lot longer.
A/freeze like this: see reference to VW's G12/G12+ specification at the bottom of the page.
http://partsjunction.co.uk/index.php?ma ... ucts_id=13" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
This Bluecol add explains the newer technology very nicely (this is Bluecols new product...maybe the name needs changing to tangcol)
http://www.bluecol.co.uk/index.cfm?page=75" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Use a 50:50 mix for best protection, that means you will need 8 litres (well just over but 8 is fine) not a cheap job but will last.

Re: Coolant?
As long as you change your coolant at regular intervals there shouldnt be a problem, the REME (bit I was in in the Army) ski lodge had 4 syncros from new and had normal blue coolant from 6 months old throught to them finally being sold off after 15 years of a lot of miles etc and they were fine ???
Even new vw stuff specifies that green stuff but when i spoke to VW commercial about weather it was needed there head mechanic said no its just what vw inveted for them selves!!!!

Re: Coolant?
As with everything....Lubricants/grease/antifreeze have all improved over the past 25 years. Newer technologies and materials have led to higher quality and improved protection. There are those that stick with the original stuff and sometimes they are more suitable. Oil is a good example of this, where fully Sythetic lubriacants are unboubtedly better than old mineral based products but unsuitable for old flat 4's because of their ultra low viscosities (they are very thin). Coolant on the other hand is a different matter, why use old green/blue style antifreeze that has a limited 2 year life when there are superior Glycol organic acid long life types (up to 6 years) that cost very little more. It is a win win situation, just remember to thoroughly flush the old coolant (something you should be doing anyway)
