Autohomes pop-top query

Hi All,

The dreaded pop-top is trying my patience again!

One of the gas struts has pulled itself out of the wooden block that it's screwed into positioned on the ceiling. Upon closer inspection the wooden block has split. Originally I was going to fill the holes with wood filler that can be screwed into, however, I don't think this will work because of the significant split.

I reckon I have 2 options.

1. screw though the block to the top of the roof and re secure the strut with a long screw, nut washer affair - drastic but the roof is passed its best anyway.

2. Replace the existing wooden block. Does anybody know how this is attached to the underside of the roof? I'm a bit sceptical about securely fitting a replacement...

no photos unfortunately But will try and post some in the next day or 2. As always advice is greatly received as I don't know whether to trust my own judgement!

without seeing the split its hard to really advise , but i seriously suggest you get some proper epoxy --such as WEST system, from a marine chandlery -- in a small way and squirt the right mix into the split , around the block, and into the screw holes before you screw it all oop again. Should work -- my boat is held together by it ! Sticks like the proverbial to wood .

where were the original scewsa to hold the wooden block on? dont think I spotted them

no way!i'd rather frive around with a big hole in the roof, maybe, possibly...not

A comment on the aesthetics of high tops by the way, not about timber technicians - everything I've read about them on here is positive!
