Welding pricing guideline...

Post by chuckle-bus-tom »

I'm taking the van in for a welding quote tomorrow with a mind to obviously leave it and get the work done. I have used the garage for mechanical stuff and trust them, but just wanted to see what peoples idea of the right price for the following list of work should be:

Cut out entire front O/S arch and replace with genuine VW arch provided by me
Cut out lower rear O/S arch and little envelope panel and replace with AHS parts provided by me.
Patch up battery tray and opposite tray
Replace N/S front step with AHS part provided by me
Repair N/S front arch where seatbelt attaches
Seam seal and primer.

Thanks, and sorry for being too lazy to do a search for this info!

You stated 'seam seal and primer'... are you intending for them to fill and prep for painting after the welding work?
Is this a hobby or just an obsession???

Yes, I'll be doing the spraying shortly afterwards. I may just get them to seam seal and do the primer myself, but it depends on the weather over the next week as to whether I can as I have no cover.

Expect to pay a full days labour.i have just done 99% of what you listed. Its stuff like removing the fuel filler and general prep cleaning years of rust and filth that eats up time so if you know what u are doiing I would seriously consider doing as much of the prep as possible yourself so the garage are basically just welding and sealing for you.may save you 1/2 days labour.Speak to the garage and see if they can advise yr best option.
