thought this may be of use/interest to someone. Had my hightop for a month or two now, no particular problems ('87, 1.9 DG, 4 speed), slightly awkward finding first, but all engaging ok. Last day of week in cornwall, traffic, hillstart, could I find first? Get back home, still no first, reluctant to disengage etc, look underneath, linkage bushes a bit worn, order all bits to refurb. linkage and lever on grounds that if that didn't work I'd be looking at gearbox/clutch out.
Anyway, out I goes to fix it, bag of bits in hand, off with engine hatch, leaned on alternator for some reason and engine rocked over 6"!!! Two long engine bracket bolts broken at casing and small one missing. Off with engine bearer etc engine mouts like kitchen sponges. Fit new mounts, bolts etc and hey presto, gearchange miles better than ever and I still have linkage bushes to do, should be sweet and I suspect could be benefitting from shortshift kit although, I worry that might make me want to rush through the gate too much!
Hope this is of interest
Nick

The Short-shift/ quickshift kit made no difference to my gearshiftings after I had replaced all the bushes etc upfront with a new kit. If your gearchanges feel as if your stirring soup and neutral is sloppy, change the bushes/springs etc.
Cost me about £25 for the quickshift/ shortshift (plate with hole in middle and fixing screws), about the same for a gearstick extension which I no longer need either and about £40 for the new bushes, springs etc. Now the gearshifting is so tight, i'm having to re-learn my gear changes and I often miss gears because they aren't where they used to be. 1st is only a couple of inches directly below 2nd and going from 4th (top right as it's left-hand drive) to 3rd is a mysterious experience because it just seems to happen and doesn't feel as if i'm putting it into gear at all. All very very tight and cloe together.
You might also want to check your rear gearbox assembly as there are springs and things back there which may need attention too.

Actually there's 2 flange plates which sandwich a bush and 2 gaiters which are intended to prevent dirt entering the ball/shaft/grease ensemble.
