TD 1.6 gearbox swap 5 speed for 4 speed?

Hello good people at 80-90!
Ive got a Caravelle td 1.6, 1989. Been advised that my gearbox is Kapput, and that 5 speeds are hard to come by. Has anyone swapped a 5 for a 4 speed and if so , was there any probs?? Seems a lot cheaper than getting a rebuild....That aidan chap is away at the mo, so thought id throw it out there for you lot! I'm crap with mechanics so will be getting the geezer at manchester air cooled to do it, he seems like a decent sort...cheers, Dominic, in Manchester.

Dom,,,,,,I don't think you are trying hard enough to find yourself a gearbox for the simple reason that if you decide to swap it for a so called easier to find 4 speed box then you will also have to change the front gearbox mounting along with the complete gear linkage / due to its length.......

yeah, thanks fritz, that is in fact what ive decided to do....hang on till i get a 5 speed, then get Stef to whack it in.
