Help... Van cutting out on idle

Post by Poddington »

Hi,

Van was running badly, sounded like was on three cyclinders, and was cutting out on idle, i.e. when coming to a stop at the lights.

Put on dizzy cap, rotor arm, leads and plugs - running probs sorted, goes like a dream again, but its still cutting out, sounds like its idling too slow.

Any suggestions as to what the prob may be/how to speed up the idling?

Would a new ignition coil have an effect?

Any suggestions much appreciated!

Its an '86 1.9 DG watercooled

when was the air filter changed?

you can increase the idle speed with the idle speed screw (in the Haynes)

Cheers for the suggestions!

Changed the air filter at weekend so assuming thats ok, its exactly the same even after a long run when its up to temp which has me baffled!

No oil in the air intake either.

I haven't got a Haynes yet I've got a poor imitation!- looks like I'll need to grab one - but where abouts is the idle speed screw?

in the haynes :D

do you know your way around the Peirburg carburetor ?
Then you'll find it on the rear face of the carb body, a long thin stalk, with a slot.. sometimes has a shroud on it.

Check the vacuum pipes and connections from the air filter housing to the carb and the carb to the dizzy

Is the brake pedal really stiff.. If it is it could be a problem with the servo

Thanks again for the tips - Mixed results!

Got the idle speed increased which seemed to sort the problem - idling at the right speed and wasn't stalling. Went for a bit of a drive feeling like master of the universe but then the prob came back - rough idling and cutting out though fine driving. Gave screw another turn, problem still there, kept driving then idle returned to normal - though now a bit fast.

Checked the vacum hoses aswel - with the engine running rough, I disconnected the vacum hose from the carb to the air filter housing and the idling improved noticably, putting the hose back on had the same effect as blocking the end with my finger - I took the top of the filter housing off and to be honest couldn't see how any air would get through - there is a plate on the back - is this right?

Prob appears to happen when coming to a stop on a hill - though I suppose this is probably because of longer coasting.

With the vacuum hose off and the revs increasing it sure sounds like a rich mixture problem.

I would be checking the choke operation again
as was suggested by clartsonly

I bet it runs great when cold

Yes runs fine on cold, guessing it must be the choke then - feeling a bit out of my depth with that though, reckon I'll have to take it to someone who knows what they're doing!

Cheers for all the help folks, very much appreciated!

Try this.
With a cold engine
Depress the accelerator, then release.
take off the Pancake and take a pic down the carb. Or make a note of all the flap positions

with the engine at working temp
after a short run about
take off the pancake and take a pic down the carb. Or make a note of all the flap positions.

what you should see is a difference between the two states.
try to post up the pics (it will make a good archive picture)

better going to a mechanic with all the facts than let them tell you a load of bollox :D

Admitted defeat and took the bus to Steve at Gasure... he took the carb off - gasket knackered and a broken piece of plastic sat in the middle of it, never a good sign! Quick clean and tune up now everythin right with the world again!

Thanks for all your advice and I know I'm preaching to the converted but Steve at Gasure is a star!
