HOLY SMOKE! in the cab

I feel lousy, i have help convince my son to buy a T25 camper. He went for an Aircooled mid 80's. Nice looking van, but he went to Snowdon tuther day & had smoke coming in the cab. I told him to close his heating vents.

I read somewhere on 80-90 that th eexhaust runs thru a box which in turn trys its best to transfer that exhaust heat into warming the interior.

So it sounds like his exhaust is holed & fumes are leaking thru.

Can these be taken off & repaired?

If yo buy second hand can you see inside if they are rotted?

What dyou reckon they cost to replace....not sure of model, but his engine is 1900 petrol.

Anyone got any links??/.

Hi - sounds like you need new HEAT EXCHANGERS but they are not cheap - think around 129 per side (try Just Kampers or vw heritage). With second hand, you can look at the overall condition....then make a judgement. Is the outer shell corroded etc.

Ok, sn new is expensive, but there is a good chance the ones on there are original! So you are gonna get some use out of them!

Don't feel too miserable, sure your son will soon love his van!

Some replace them with Propex or Eber heaters. Takes some adapting to get demisters working, etc, but not dependent on heating up exhaust of engine to get inside heat.

this is one of the reasons I changed my engine, it never got hot, and would get fumes even thought there was nothing wrong with my heat exchangers!!?? I even put a fan inline to draw more hot air from the back to the front, nothing worked for me, and as I like going to cold places I had to do something drastic.

I don't think its the actual heat exchangers causing the problem. More like oil from somewhere leaking into them. The pushrods and rocker are directly above. Try removing the 2 bits of tin ware between the heat exchanger and sump and see what is dripping.

agree with the blue, deffo pushrod seals or rocker box gaskets.

aircoold heaters are awesome as long as all the bits are there.

Well put. I once melted a pair of wellies in the back of a VW beetle so they do get hot. You can lag transfer pipes and tubes to retain heat too.

Just done mine this week and had the same problem.

Drove my air cooled over to the farm tonight and that's exactly what mine was doing...smoke in the cab, but I could smell that it was burning oil Guess what job is been done tomorrow? Ya leaking push rod tubes, the heat exchangers are covered in oil. So hopefully new seals with fix both problems

I had a similar problem and then after installing a woodburner (not in the van though seen one with it done!) had some heat proof mastic left over and thought would that do the trick around where the exhaust stubs go into the heat exchanger, so filled in the gaps around the pipe and the casing and so far seems to work, go for sealing gaps in the tinware as well
