Swaping a gear box over. DK to ABD

Post by wackos00 »

Hello All,

I've a question that I hope someone can answer. First a bit of backround. My van was a 2l A/C bus which I converted to a Subaru powered campervan (see my thread under campers for a look) going the Rjes bell housing conversion route. Unfortunatly my 2l A/C gear box, I think it is code DK though its hard to see, is broken, 4th gear has teeth broken. To get it fixed by Cog Box is going to cost me in excess of £800 which I do not hav right now, but aim to have done in the not too distant future. Fortunatly for me Pepperami has given me his old box for the price of some cider so now I have a working ABD box (thanks again Pepperami) to use untill I save enough to get my old box fixed. Over the weekend I got my old box out and took the rjes bell off it. Now there are a few differances between the two boxes.
1. The bracket at the back of the box is different, mine has 3 studs holding the bracket to the box, the new one has 4, I don't have the ABD bracket and was wondering if any 4 stud bracket will fit this box and will it fit my chassis?
2. The linkage is different, with the ABD I don't have any of the linkage and it mounts differently to my old box, do I need to replace the whole linkage, or can I just get the last link and mounting parts at the gearbox end and again are all later ones the same?
3. The new box does not have the reversing light switch on it, I guess it was mounted at the other end of the linkage by the gear stick or something? I guess I don't need a reversing light, as there is no law against it as its not on the MOT but I would like it if posible, would it be a hard job to sort?

I was going to ask this in the alternative engin part but as this is all VW stuff thought I would get a better responce here.

Thanks again,

Jack

lots of preloved 4 speed petrol mounts here
reverse switch goes in the reverse switch housing which is on the n/s of the box about 9" from the front, you can use your old one I think, if not I have loads of preloved ones here
i don't know wether the front half of the gearlinkage can be retained but you need the rear half for a petrol watercooled van, any of the usual suspects, eg billy739, should have them, also there's a guy on ebay selling the box out of a van and everything else is available, search vw camper gearbox
if you want anything contact me before 2pm tommorow as I am away Weds till Tuesday unless it can wait till after then

Thanks Aidan for getting the bracket to me so quickly.
Does anyone know where I might find the rest of the parts I need? I am at a loss and am getting desperate!
Cheers,
Jack
