broke the starter motor solenoid

Post by 156silver »

Morning!

As i was making the final preparations to put my rebuilt engine back in I decided to take off the starter motor connections and give them a good clean as they were looking a bit dry and green. As I was undoing the 13mm nut on the solenoid it started to get a bit stiff and then sheared off.....no swearing involved honest..... :x :x :x

So a number of questions:

If I dismantle the solenoid, can I replace the stud/bolt from inside?
Is it possible to get a replacement solenoid separately from the complete starter assembly?
Is the starter for all petrol engines the same, I've a 2.0L Aircooled CU engine?
Has anyone in the Sussex area got one they want to sell?

Thanks for your help.

Pretty sure this will require a replacement solenoid and as most starters fail through worn out bushes/armature I'm guessing there will be some kind soul out there with a busted starter that you can scavenge the solenoid off.......?????

your local friendly alternator/starter refurber will be able to overhaul the solenoid and replace the cap with a new one, preferably the correct one with the long stud, they are still available from the supply chain, but most places won't carry them in stock, my local guy does now because of me.
I have fully refurbed starters on the shelf which all come with new caps and bushes, the contacts inside the cap are the bit that goes so not worth using old one imho as the caps are cheap enough - but you need a press and the right tools to remove the cap and refit new one without buggering up the case ime.
