Thanks! We've been working at the body since we got it 'cos we wanted to paint before fitting out.

I fancied body colour bumpers. Yeah, paint holds pretty well, bumpers seem a bit more matty than the van even though they were more glossy before... we didn't flat down the bumpers beforehand but I did treat the rust. Bumper ends seem to hold the paint fine, the grilles aren't so sure about the silver hammerite though!

All I need now are some slightly bigger steelies and a lowering kit and we're there. Oh, and a sink and cooker and....

Interesting reading, when applying coat after coat does it not effect the overall finish? Surley its better to flat back between every coat?

Would there be a noticable difference between flatting back between everycoat compared to flatting back once after three coats? I would imagine any imperfections would be amplified if they were not flatted back?

For best results flat after each coat. If you're after near-perfect results that is. And as DivingDaisee has pointed out, combicolor goes on plastics well so you can do roofs etc.

Worth pointing out too (as it gets asked repeatedly) is the final result has little or nothing to do with the paint but has everything to do with correct mix, temperature, body prep and flatting. Final finish is therefore entirely in the hands of the painter.

This is by far the best way to spruce up any tired VW. I would have never thought that this could be done and get a very acceptable finish. Mine came up trumps and looks very smart. Being bright yellow it turns a lot of heads. I have not flattened it back yet either. Maybe i will or maybe i wont.....The finish is good enough.
I would post the piccys on here but I feel I would probably spread the laptop up the wall...

If some kind person could post them for me...Hint then all could see the T25 banana....

No kidding! I was a lot less fussy than I originally intended when prepping and painting and it still came up well, I'm confident with flatting back and a second coat it'll look more than good enough. Comes down to it, I want a usable van more than a showpiece.

Can't wait to see the bright yellow!

Well now I've started you just have to keep going, started the prep over the easter weekend, amazing how much work it took, didn't help that in places underneath a dodgy re-spray was a lot of high build primer. Got to that stage of what the f**k have I done , the once passable bus looked a mess , so I had abrew and sat and looked at it, imagined a nice shiney bus and off I went.
First coat went on OK would go with the advice try it something first to get the technique, then the beasties landed, although here on Skye the midgies haven't appeared a load of mozzies liked the idea of sticking their feet in the tacky paint.

Would go with using Vactan it has stood up to a Skye winter, wet , wet and more wet! really well, so those bits didnnt need so much prep.
The rustoleum is excellent, as I trialed it on the front panel which had a load of stone chips and a area paint that had reacted with the dodgy respray , sanded that back last september some places to bare metal, one coat of paint and no rust even though the bus has been out all winter.
Will post some pictures when done , going blue lower half and white upper, with a second coat done this weekend and flatting back and a polish , should be good. Will keep the bus looking good and keep the rust and salt air away.

If you google NATO Green RAL you'll probably get an exact match
Nato Green, British Standard 381C #285 LRC-553 if it helps

my boy friend went into our local brewers decoraters supplies and came out with two full colour charts for rustoleum paints (RESULT) !!!!!

German Army uses RAL 6031 (not on chart). You don't have to buy matt if you don't want to.

(brown 8027 and black 9021 make up the camouflage pattern)

Hello

Very interested in painting our van this way.
Any ideas whether i'll have any problems given its currently painted in hammerite ('hammered' bumpy effect).
Will it take loads of coats? Will it react in strange and horrible ways?
Currently in black on the bottom with a dark green upper....would love to change the colour too. Guessing it will take loads of coats regardless
