VW Kamper Pop Top and struts - help please

Post by sabcully »

Hi People,
could anybody give me some advise please?
Have just bought a Kamper and was wondering if the gas struts can be re-gased or
will they need to be replaced? The roof unfolds OK but it is more difficult than it should be, me thinks.
Also, when the top is up, where the fold is on the corners, should the top one overlap the bottom or should
the top be bend around so the rubber goes inside. It looks like it should overlap to let the water run down
but we have all corners doing something different, so we don't know.
Hope you know what I mean. Can post pictures if need be.

Thanx for your help. Lot's to learn here. :ok

Sab

Hi, can't just remember how the side flaps should look off hand. I'll pop me top tomorrow and have a look and I'll take some piccies as well :ok

As for the stuts, don't know about getting them regassed but, you can get replacements made to your sample, not cheap though. They do pop up on ebay every so often. I stopped bidding at £100 for the last set that were on

sabcully , i got new struts from Germany , makers name is on the strut , easy to replace , cost £ 220 , well worth it really .
Upper side panel should overlap lower one , but the odd fankle at the corners shouldn't be too much of a problem .

Like jaylo said, top flaps should overlap bottom flaps front and rear.

Hi all
Thanx very much for the replies. The top goes and stays up OK it just needs a bit of pushing so the struts issue can wait.

Mininut, your roof looks neat...! Mine was replaced in 2004 and has hardly been used but the corners look nothing like yours.
Me thinks when it was used there was not a lot of care taken when pulling down, hence the damage. Will have a look at what can
be done.
How are these pops in drizzle, rain, heaven opens up sort of weather?

Thanks for the help, forum is fab !

Why, thank you  TBH I think my roof had very little use with its first two owners. The previous owner to me had a child so he used a little more. Now it gets used all the time.

Never had any problems with ours in the 3 years we have had it. Only last week we were in Wales and all through one night it was howling a gale and raining really heavy. Not a problem :D
