Does anyone know anything about the 1.6 diesel put in Golf Mk II in South Africa around the year 2000 or so? I've located a crashed one that appears like it has the same none turbo diesel as my 81 van had. The price is good so I have a guy going to look at it for me tommorow. I can't go myself as its a 12 hour bus ride away. Even so any suggestions and I can talk to the mechanic. Nobody seems to want to buy it as everyone is trying to upgrade to more power but if it fits the hole my old one came out of I'm happy with it if it works. Especially as the roads are so terrible that I could never even get my old one up to any speed anyway. Anyway, enough on African roads, I know more than I'd like to about them, does anyone know about Afican Engines?
Thanks

Not sure they done a 1.6 diesel in SA I was under the impresion the Mk1 golf was made until until 2004 and then carried on when the new Golf arrived as the Citi golf with only petrol engines. Post 2004 Golfs use the 1.9 or 2.0 ltr Pump Deuse engines.

T25 1.6n/td factory fitted cs jx engines had shims for setting the inlet&exhaust valves for the cylinder head camshaft followers .Engines fitted for the golf jr engine code had hydraulic camshaft followers ie self setting with oil .I think the head gasket for each type are not interchangableas due to the oil way for the hydro bucket cylinder head.So you would need to fit the complete engine .If its a good engine swop it i had M2 1.6td in my van it fitted okay dont forget you need a spiget bearing for crankshaft so that the T25 gearbox input shaft will fit to it.Use your flywheel&clutch angled sump&oil pump. Out of interest does your van have sump protector as like a steel plate under it to protect it from flints /debri.
Standard two wheel drive diesel T25s have a thin insulated sheet metal cover fitted under and around bottom of the engine. The four wheel drive syncro T25 has better protection i believe. As you discribed the roads i thought you might have a proper sump guard for two wheel drive T25 versions in your country.
