Oil specks on tailgate

Post by devdub »

My brother has an '86 1.6td that is depositing tiny specks of oil on the tailgate, this only happens when the engine has worked pretty hard (up a long hill, on a motorway for instance). Does anyone have any idea as to what could be causing this.

thanks, Devdub

That will be crank seals, with luck the rear one which is easy to replace, but if it is the one between the crank and the flywheel it is an engine out job, or you could just wipe it off :D

I did tell him wiping it off would be a good option.

We were kind of thinking it could be a breather problem. I suppose it would be sensible to check the pipes out before we go looking for more serious problems.

The oil filler pipe on my van rusted through on the bottom elbow just where it bolts on. Worth checking anyway.

Oil specks on the back mean only that you have an oil leak somewhere, could be anything, anywhere.

The one positive thing about it ...you're environementally friendly. Instead of depositing the oil all long the road, air turbulence just deposits it on the back.

Mine did this. Turned out to be leaky turbo seals on the exhaust side. Mine had oil dripping from the joint between the downpipe and backbox as well.

Check out the turbo oil feed. This is what left my old van looking like it had the measles.
