Straight Engine Swap for 1.6 Diesel

Post by Dubwana »

My 1.6D (non turbo) head is shot in my 1981 van. I am thinking of dropping in an alternative engine. But I don't want to do any changes to mountings, gearbox etc. Just pull it out and drop a new one in. So can anyone let me know what VW engines would go straight into the van. I'd prefer to use diesel, could a later engine go in? Maybe a 1.7 a turbo 1.6 engine go in the same space? If I can get a decent looking head secondhand head for the engine I'll probably go that route but this would be an alternative to consider.

Thanks in advance,

Dubwana

Alternative diesel engines are in the wiki. But as a suggestion a 1.9n 1Y engine as found in caddies golfs passats can be fitted without to much hassle. You need the 1.6n sump /oil pump and spiget bearing for the gearbox input shaft.Engine mounts are a straight swop and you can use the 1.6 inlet & exhuast manifold. There are topics on here about replacement diesel engines i suggest you do a search.
