Does anyone know of a way to attach a long surfboard to the side of a hi-top roof (pictured)? The board is 8'10" - so better out than in, as they say - and I wondered if any side-racks existed for this kind of roof, or if anyone had done a bodge? I would kind of like the rack to be removable (I had thought about bolting on some of those metal bike hanger hooks but would would not be very attractive)
I had this problem, I now can carry loads of boards on my roof, I bought a Thule roof rack that locks onto my gutters and goes over the top of the high top, looks ok to and excellent quality but not cheap, Carry 2 stand up paddle boards two short boards and a mal. Nothing in the van,, sweet! People are always asking me were I bought it, from a Thule dealer, I made a ladder that I put to gether to get to the boards which is no probs.
Nice one booster24. My googling fingers are just warming up. Otherwise it is a 'Heath Robinson' affair made out of old bits of plumbing and shelving brackets, I fear.
Regarding getting surfboards onto your hard top...I fitted mini bolt on gutters to mine....this then enables you to use standard roofrack equipment to carry sports gear...I ordered mine from Jenson USA and had them shipped over...but I believe similar items are now available in the UK
I have used mine to carry surfboards and kayaks.
The gutters are permanently attached but are small and discreet....the roof racks etc can obviously be removed as per normal gutter attachments.
Cheers Jame - I've got gutter and have ordered the Thule set up - but without the extensions. For the time being I'm going to see if three brackets on one side (without the bars) will give me the security to lash the board to. Luckily (I suppose) I don't have a full quiver of boards so starting with the one and hopefully not losing it half way down the M6 will be the test
Sorry I havent been back about this a million and one things been on my mind!! I made mine from scratch i used uni strut with bolts to attach to the van then a slide on ssterm for my boards so that when its off i jjust have two strpis on the side !!
