1.9 watercooled vs 2.1 injection or other? Advice.

Post by jones47 »

Hi all,

Well slowly getting nearer to going out to see some vans but again are seeking some advice.

We have seen for sale several vans but wondered what you guys think regarding engines....which is better driving wise and most economical out of the 1.9 petrol watercooled engine or the 2.1 fule injection? There is also a vn with a Subaru Impreze enigne in...think is 2.1...is this any good?

Also, regarding LPG.....would this be better on any particular engine size? Out of the 1.9 or 2.1 which is most suited to a LPG to get the best MPG?

Sorry to ask so many questions. We are close to viewing a few but just in final decision making phase!

Thanks all.

All are Ok for LPG, I would definitely look at the Subaru conversion. Done correctly it is more economical and outperforms the others in all respects. Should get quite a few more replies on this one, all depends on what you want, an occaisional camper or daily driver. If its the former then I would go for the best general condition for the money, one thats been looked after and well serviced. The 'Sub'y would be my first choice to view but it is more for the 'enthusiast'.

I own a 2.1 so....
There is little difference in fuel consumption between the 1.9 & 2.1...both can run LPG again with little difference between the two. I'm told the slighly more sophisticated fuel sytem on some of the 2.1's makes them better for the LPG conversion. 2.1 is slightly better to drive with extra torque and power.
Scuby power is good and better all round (fuel consumption and power) IF DONE WELL! but may de-value an original van (by that I mean Westfalia or other original model/conversion) doesn't really matter on custom conversion where this engine would add value.

A 2.1 (112bhp)
1.9 (78bhp)

so 2.1 has 34 BHP more, this makes a big difference

Scooby is best option, but the cost may put you off
