Speedo flickers

Post by telrog »

My speedo suddenly stopped working, thenstarted again but now flickers about so I cant tell what speed I'm doing.
Is this in need of a new cable? only the milometer still works fine.
It's doin' me noggin in....

If it stopped altogether though you may find it will again fail soon. Check that the sleeve ring is tight at the back of the speedometer. You could unscrew it and shoot some oil down the cable. I believe you can just pull the inner out from the speedo end to clean and oil it. Then when you replace it make sure it takes the largest posible radius as it disapears into the nether regions. Twist it at the last knockings so as to make sure it is engaged in the square hole in one of the front hub caps. A kink or sharp bend will cause the cable to wind up then catch up with a start every revolution which will cause large woblifications at the pointer. These may smooth out at certain speeds.
Of course if you have a posh electric speedo then all the above is tosh!
