The heat EX's were rusted completely to the silencer, so i had to get it off whole!!!
for those that may need to do this task, a major tip. I sprayed all the bolts/nuts with release oil (i used WD40) for a week (luckly i did not need to use the van.)
All the nuts i needed to undo came off without any greif.
I am changing the heat EX's out for a set of J tubes from Lee At LA performace. for tow reasons
1. I dont use the van in winter
2. The cost of the heat EX's was £160 + delivery each and the J tubes £180 all in.
I was going to try to refurb the heat EX's but as you can see that may prove a little difficult.
One more tip, Two trolly/bottle jacks are a great help as the whole system is quite unwieldy, and does not drop away from the block very easily
so here are some piccys of my old system after removal, you can see one of the heat EX flanges has come completly loose from the pipes, no wonder the Van bubbled and popped like mad under deceleration.

this i suspect is typical heat exchanger damage
