Re: jx engine problem
Provided there is no other damage to the engine from the failure then I see no reason as to why you cannot put another head onto it - I have done it in the past without issue.....

Re: jx engine problem
Be prepared to possibly see some damage on the top of the pistons. A small amount can be ignored as long as they are not sharp edged.
Re: jx engine problem
What Caveman says, but the damage you need to look for is on the top of the piston crowns, if you can see any marking or impressions of a valve that has been kissing the piston crowns, (if yes) then there is also damage to the conrods, so bottom end wants checking out,(JX) is a weak engine, If all looks ok and no damage or markings to pistons, Then clean the block face, remove any debri, gasket, etc & polish up remove any crap that has gone into the cylinders (Keep in there very clean, stuff rags or kitchen roll, paper, w.h.y. into cylinders, cant emphasise enough to be as clean as poss, Your choice of cylinder head does not have to be a replacement JX. A s/h head off a 1.6D NA will go on,B/N your lookig at £250.- £300. Just check that there is no cracks in between the valve seats if there is then its fubarbed, dont buy it. keep looking. when fitting the head to the block, take 2 head bolts that you removed and cut off the socket end and while its in the vice cut a deep slot in the top. Screw these 2 bolts into opposite corners on the Block only finger tight, Your new gasket that you buy is the Elring 3 hole size, plus you will need to buy new head bolts, these can be ordered from any good motor factor shop (not GSF or JK) or VW, choice is yours, the gasket will indicate which is the top. Fit it (Top Facing UP). Place gasket over bolts this aligns the gasket so it doesnt move when placing the head on. Put new bolts in only loose, then remove cut off 1s replace with new, If you bought an Elring Gasket there is a guide chart sequence telling you how to tighten down and what torque settings you need fur the new bolts that you replaced. Sorry for bieng long winded in reply,--------------caveman wrote:Be prepared to possibly see some damage on the top of the pistons. A small amount can be ignored as long as they are not sharp edged.

To add to Grumpy Midgets reply....
Be aware there are THREE different thickness of head gaskets - they have a notching indicator system on them and I would say if you have the old gasket then take that one with you to GSF/use it as a reference for the new'un
