under the tower crank breather there is a number

gw?
no such animal.. sorry.

1.9 Carb is DG.
1.9 injection is a DH.

your engine is natural to your van and is probably a DG.

That means

A - It has been nicked at some time in it's life

or

B - It is a genuine VW recon unit - have another look and see if there is a very small (~10mm dia) VW logo to the left of where the number should be.

Well, looks like we're getting somewhere. There is a small vw logo on the left side of the area mentioned, but no other numbers on that face.
Also on the upper face of the block the letter U is stamped. Any ideas?
The van is an e reg 1987. it needs a silencer but the design of it suggests it is the earlier >85 style silencer
Is this poss.?

either exhausts fit either early or late.

I have a late exhaust on and early engine for instance

I also have a VW replacement engine with that VW logo the numbers are there but very feint
VW reconditioned engines have a star in that area I think

Re Exhausts, yep what he said ^^^^^^^

Either will fit either :)

It must be the complete exhaust system which would have to be used if they are interchangeable,? because the earlier silencer has the two flanges on the front face which the appropriate pipes fit to. the newer has the flange on the n/s and a different pipe set up.

Kev, just for interests sake..... I was just looking for recommended spark plugs to try to help 'jake 1953' and the dreaded Haynes quotes the 'GW' as....
1.9 ltr... 8.6 comp ratio...66KW @ 4600 RPM... digijet injection. (98 RON minimum fuel quoted..... if ignition timing is standard setting).
