1600 air cooled to 2.0 Aircooled

Post by hombre »

hi all. wanting to give my old t25 a bit more life, Currently with a 1600 ct Aircooled. Talking to a few people and they say that dropping in a 2.0 in is the best way to go. is this the a good call? is it fairly straighrt forward, like is the gearbox the same, or would that have to be changed aswel? what else would have to be changed?
im a bit new to all this, so not even sure where to start looking? does anynoe know of a place where i could source what i need, or does anyone have an engine theive taken out, just kicking about, lol?
going to our 1st camper fest in oswestry next month, are these good places to pick up parts even whole engines?
what sort of price am i looking at for this kinda thing?
any advice help etc would be brilliant
cheers

In my opinion, you're better off building a 1776 engine with new heads including good exhaust and a set of good dual carbs (like 36 Dells). Much cheaper than a 2.0 Type 4 engine rebuild anyway.

If you're headstrong on a Type 4 (2.0) swap then it's easy too.

We'd be interested to know the answer to this, as we know someone with a 2.o litre engine married to 1.6 box and she's having a lot of difficulty with her clutch/gear changing!

We went for the 1776 option :D

1.6 and 2L box are identical apart from the final drive ratio... so if it doesnt go into gear etc, then either the clutch is US.. or the spigot bearing is dragging the input shaft, or the gear change rod wasnt disconnected from the box when the engine was lowered and bent, this causes all sorts of horrible change problems...

hmmm, maybe the 2nd option? i've driven it & it took a heck of a lot of effort to actually press the pedal down,.
& it made a horrid creaky noise.. like something rubbing somewhere, it free'd up a bit after she took it to 'her' garage
& you no longer need to use both feet to work it but they're to busy to fix it,. took it to 'our' garage & he said something
about a shaft & a sleeve rubbing or similar.. he wont know for sure until it's on the ramps & costing lots of money :(

Just find a 1600 ct and get any engine builder who works on VW beetles to upgrade it to 1776. :ok

We got Laurie Pettit to do ours, but as vanagonman says, any good vw engine builder will be able to it for you.

I was going to have a go myself, but I chickened out! (we still have 3 engines in various conditions tho, so I may give it a go one day, when I have less other stuff to do)
