Hi all,
Am trying to remove my Syncro front hubs in order to put some longer studs in!!!! The van has ABS so has the ring behind the hub. Having huge problems in removing the hub...is it usually this tight or am I missing something....yes I have taken out the three 'Phillips' screws. I have even tried a gear puller but have succeeded pushing the shaft in and not really moving the hub much at all.
Is it a case of brute force....thought I'd ask first rather than break something!!!!
Have looked on the Wiki but couldnt see any links with the removal of them.
Any help greatly appreciated....are the rear hubs easier???
You need a press and you destroy the bearings, replace the studs, replace the bearings and seals and reassemble, again with a press and ideally the correct tools, it's all in the bentley manual.
Have the tools and press here if required, I'm doing a set for SyncroAndy at the moment
Hi Aiden,
Many thanks for reply. So gear puller no good!!!! Am borrowing manual this morning...so will read up on it. Is it poss without press? Do you need to take drive shaft out? Are the rear ones easier??? I hope so.
Thanks again.
you need to remove the upright from the van mate, it can't be done insitu no matter how big a puller you have and how big a hammer, but you may prove me wrong.....
The rears are straightforward....ish depending on the rust holding the drum to the hub, undo 46mm nut, remove wheel, remove brake drum, remove hub, or both together and then press hub off drum, press out old studs, press in new, service brakes, refit.....
rear ones a lot easier than the front, just did my front ones as aidan said you need to take the uprights off the van we could press the front hub off and had to resort to a few whacks of a sledge on appropraite bushing to knock them out see front overhaul for some of commentry if your replacing the bearings may want to look at doing some of the other stuff while your down there like the bushings, ball joints, etc definately have the Bentley manual beside you as will save you a lot of time and trouble good luck with it paul
Well. have succeeded in taking front hub off (without taking the arm off), by 'teasing' it off with hammer and tool I made from 'soft steel' as to not damage the hub. I knocked it from alternate sides and it has come off neatly!!! Bearings dont seem to be damaged (I suppose they shouldnt be as I was knocking away from them).
Am I the first to succeed at this or has something gone terribly wrong??????

Thanks for all your advice.
Not suprised that your hub came off so easily, I took the press method when installing my longer studs and couldnt believe how easily the bearing split. The press hardly registered the force required. If you look at the bearing race you'll see a small lip and this is what you are pressing over.
I also pressed my bearing back together after greasing well and didnt replace as per bentlys
2k later and no problems....pays ya money and takes ya chances etc.
i sometimes dont replace the bearing either,if it was in good order before itll be fine to re-grease and press back together as some of my own vans will testify from years ago,cj.
That makes me feel alot better!!! Yes, the race did come out with the hub but well greased up it went back in nice and square. I took it nice and gently and there doesnt seem to any play at all. If they fail in the future....a trip to the local garage me thinks.
Its been a Great experience though????!!!!
