2.0 l Aircooled will not fire

Post by phade »

Hi everyone,

My Aircooled 2.0 campervan has a slightly odd problem. I had managed to start it up on a flat driveway with no problems at all and had just moved it about 30 feet onto a steep slope (van facing uphill). I then switched off the engine to move one of my other vehicles (so that I could get that one out) and tried to restart my camper and it refused to even fire.

I have checked the following so far (on my own):-

- All four cylinders to see if they are apparently firing. I used a timing gun and taped up the trigger so that I could see the timing gun from the front whilst turning over the engine. All four cylinders appear to be firing.

- Checked the fuel pump for delivery, which seems to work. This also disproved the fuel filter as well. There are also no fuel leaks.

- Checked all switched live connections to see if they work (both chokes, air cut-off valves, ignition coil)

- Checked the ignition coil to see if it was open circuit and it wasn't

- Checked the HT leads resistance values, where I got the following readings:-

- - Coil to rotor arm 1 k Ohms
- - #1 Cylinder approx 2 k Ohms
- - #2 Cylinder approx 4 k Ohms (this one may be suspicious since both ends state that they should be 1k each)
- - #3 Cylinder approx 2 k Ohms
- - #4 Cylinder approx 2 k Ohms

- Checked the air filter and it appears to be clean. The air filter unit also appears to be clean (there's only a very slight mist of oil at the very top left rear of the air filter unit)

Does anyone think it could be something like the ignition amplifier on it's way out ? Or is there something else I have missed ?

Any advice welcome and thank you all in advance.

If you only moved it 30 feet and switched it off, you could have just flooded the engine.Try removing the spark plugs and drying them off.
