Any good way to patch a heat exchanger?

My bus failed the MOT

The N/S heat exchanger on my CU has sheared off on one of the 2 pipes near the flange onto the back box..

I've tried paste and it cracks/blows through....

i wonder if one of those metal clamps would fit around then mould the otherside around the flange plate.


Realy i need a new one but at 180 quid at JK i'd try a bodge 1st..

what about a second had heat exchanger

a few years ago one of mine was like that - not quite rusted through all way around the flange though. If its just for getting it through the MOT then what you suggest might do it. I used good old exhaust bandage with added putty on top, it allows the flexibility to mold it a bit better.

The repair really only lasted a few weeks but it let me get time to get the funds together to replace both exchangers. I got mine from Euro carparts - cheaper that JK (back in 2002)!

Got a 2nd hand one

Need to patch the exchanger shield but rest looks fine.

Rang VW as its still listed on vagcat........

2 month back order and a cool price tag of £542+VAT Each side!

Some while ago I used "I Cant Believe its Not Nails" on an exhaust blowing badly on a car, it passed the MOT and stayed on there until I replaced some months later. It was on a seam, and a hole, it stuck good, without any blowing. I warmed the exhaust first so it curred quicker. The hole was small enough not to need patch stuck on with it but possible to cut a bit of tin and stick it on and cover it in the stuff, tempoarily holding in place with some wire wraped round it. Might be worth a try? but without seeing it in picture or the flesh it may not do the trick. hope this might help
