Oil grade

Post by nrxx »

Hi, Does anyone know if Fuchs Titan XTR is ok to use in my 1.9 DG? I rang GSF to ask for Quantum but was told that they don't carry it anymore and that Titan has taken over as the VW recommended oil for a t25. I'm not worried about quality, only grade as the Titan is 10w40 and the Quantum was 15w40.

Thanks

These engines are not suited to use the any 10w40 grade oil such as the Titan 10w40,,,,, , The Quantum 15w40 or similar grade is /was regarded as the one to use in the semi synthetic range of modern automotive oils......

I was over at Volkswagen Commercial Parts (Main VW Dealer parts suppliers) on Monday...had a chat with the manager regarding Quantum oils in generally, picked up 5 litres of Mineral 15W/40 Quantum Blue for my 2.1 MV T3 and 5 litres of Quantum Silver (semi Sythetic 10W/40) for the Beetle. plus oil filters, bung and washer. Quatum Red (15W/40 mineral Diesel oil)...Blue (15W/40 mineral, primarily for Petrol engines)..Silver (Semi Synthetic 10W/40 for newer engines) and Gold (not sure but think 5W/40 fully synthetic long life for extended service intervals on newer vehicles)and all still available and quite reasonably priced.
I paid £8.61 plus Vat for the Blue and £9.95 plus Vat for the Silver (trade) 2X filters a bung and copper washer totaled £29.70 can't be bad for genuine VW quality lube....which begs the question of why don't people go to the main agent?

Thanks everyone. Kind of confirms what I thought re: gsf man! Phoned again today and got same spiel. I also popped into our main dealers to discover that they only carry 10w40 and runnier now. I'll get gsf to swap to Titan universal.

Man after my own heart. Supermarket oil is perfectly adequate. Just change it regular.

They run fine on average oil and I've owned VWs for around 25 years. Slick50 or a teflon additive is worth doing if your engine is middle aged. These V-dubs seem to need a good 50k on the clock before doing it though. They're run in nicely by then.

The last time I bought Titan 15w/40 from GSF was last December. At that time it wasn't listed on their website but if you email them as I did they will give you the part No as above so you can order online. I just went to my nearest branch at Swinton (Manchester North) & they had it in stock.

VW appear to have stopped carrying the blue one we all want (at Inverness VW dealer anyway). Asked what they sell that I should use........no answer!

Any suggestions of an alternative (we don't have GSF up here).

mikey9, you could try a suitable oil from the Castrol range. (VW Quantum is Castrol based.) You only need a mineral based oil so it shouldn't be silly money like synthetic.
