Will need some new tyres in the not too distant future. Do I take the opportunity of changing to 15" steelies (those Mefros look nice, who sells them or is it an ebay.de job?) or be radical and take the unusual step of keeping it on the 14" steel?

Without doubt get some 15" Mefros from Henning at http://www.syncro-services.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; cuz they look better and your tyre selection is much much greater. For road use a nice set of 6x15 Mefros and some 205/70/15 tyres will look the biz

Got to say that is the way I was leaning, but being a tight Yorkshireman don't know whether I can justify spending nearly half the value of the bus again on a set of wheels

The 14in with metal hubcaps is a good look on a syncro I think, mainly because there don't seem to be many left these days! Got to be the 205/80 equiv on 6J rims though, 185's look lost in syncro arches! Problem is hardly anyone makes decent tread patterns in a 205R14ish size now. BFG used to but don't anymore, which is a shame as they are great (BFG seem to like droping tyres, even if they are still popular (Trac Edge anyone?).

Hancook and Maxxis might with some pestering (size called 27x8.50R14), if they can't be bothered then you might be forced into 15in if you want anything other than a road or winter tyre, which probubly won't give you much sidewall height for an apropreate width. No questions lifes easyer for tyre choice on 15/16in but thats always been the way. I wonder how long that'll last now every 4x4 seems to come with 18in+ wheels?

On the plus side, 'Colway' is back so I've heard, though they are now Polish I think.

I went through the same deliberations over this and in the end went with the Mefro's. I wanted something solid that meant I could put some decent tyres on the van with the minimum of fuss (didn't want alloys, longer studs, etc). Not actually put them on the van yet, but they look good and sturdy.

As for the 14"... there are a few 205's out there and I have been looking into what is available.. I can actally get a good selection in France, but they cost a bit more now... or an alternative is a Khumo road venture in 215/75r14.. good load rating and AT tyre.. prob slightly more road bias, but could be ab option

If there was enough interest then perhaps we could order a batch of the 27- 8.5 r 14 tyres.. several different ones available, inc the new KL71....

But practicaly... 15" mefro's are a better solution... the 14" and limited 205's make for a good road general running around combination..

General grabber AT2 is made still being made for 14" rims, but i don't know if they are sold in the UK. I have found a few places that sells General here in Norway, so I will try to order a set when I'm back from vacation. Because i can't afford new rims now I'm planning to use them this summer, then get them studded this fall and get new bigger rims and summer tyres next spring.

Interesting, they don't seem to have a clue what they can get through their surplyers! I got a local place enquire to avalability in Jan and 'NLA' was the answer from his distribitor. When I ordered mine in 2007 most places said something simular as there was only 2 in the country at the time but when I found someone (listed on BFGs website as a distrebutor) who actully put in the order, 5 tyres turned up within a month. Perhaps if you go to someone with a direct line to BFG/Mitchalin the answer is yes but not through a middleman? Herd they only list a restock date when tyres are on their way, which they won't be if they haven't been ordered so perhaps thats what makes people say NLA?

15" steel wheels from a Mercedes W124 Estate have a higher rating than those from a W124 Saloon. The part number is 1244001002, 7J x 15 H2 ET46 and they should have a little sticker on them with a picture of and Estate with T - Modell printed underneath

Big wheels and chunky tyres are nice, no doubt ...would like some myself.

Here's the low budget option though. 195/80/14 on the original 5.5" steelies. Didn't dare go 205 as they would balloon quite a bit over the rim. Tyre choice in 195/80/14 isn't spectacular either, but better than 185 or 205

Pretty sure the centre bore is too small & offset likely to be 55 or 45, from what I remember when I ruled out putting some on mine.

As for 14" tyres , mine came from Germany with a nice set of Semperit 215R14 used as the summer tyres on 6J Carat alloys. Bit heavy steering at low speeds but looked quite good. Unfortunately I had to dump em as the DOT code showed them to be 12 years old so thought it was just asking for trouble.
