Convert 4-speed shifter to 5-speed?

Post by asahartz »

Anyone know if it's possible to convert a 4-speed gear shifter to 5-speed, and how to do it?

I put a V8 in my van, which came with a 5-speed box attached. However the guy I bought it from never did come across with the shift box (I'm not about to diss forum members on here, but he won't return my communications).

It works, I can get 4 speeds, but not 5th of course. So what can I do to convert it? (Or does anyone have a 5-speed shifter at a sensible price? ;)

Anyone know if it's possible to convert a 4-speed gear shifter to 5-speed,
,,

it can be done with a lot of buggering about to get it to work properly.....most people use a complete 5 speed linkage when employing a 5 speed box.

Yes, well I would have done too if the parts I was promised had been delivered. Instead of which I need to sort out what I have as quickly as I can.

I changed from 4 speed to a 5 without any issues at all.

Dont forget, 1st gear is below reverse - not in the normal place where first is on the four speed. I have to push the gear stick down to get in first (same as i do reverse). Its not ideal but it works ok.....

If you dont know this then its possible that you are currently using gears 2-5 already?

Hope im not being patronising...

Is it worth it, as the gearing is not much different in top gear.
just closer on a 5 speed. (I think)

I bet i know exactly where you bought it all from, and i know that that van has long gone (bits of it are in my garage!) not really any help but even if you did get hold of him i wouldnt think he still had gear box bits left

Ah, so it is! Had to turn the HBoL upside down to realise that. In which case, I don't actually need it then! There is enough grunt to set off in third if I want to. In second it saw off a sporty Fiesta from the lights today - I'd love to have seen the look on the guys face!
