I'm looking to confirm my engine number as I know the engine has been changed by a previous owner, as far as I can tell the number on the V5 is not whats fitted. Is the number stamped on the engine casing anywhere? I can make out some of the details on the shrivelled up label on the top of the casing but I can't make out all of the digits. I can confirm that its a DG (73 PS?). There lies another issue, I thought the DG was 78 PS?
Be grateful for any suggestions.

Your engine number is on a small vertical area immediately below the black plastic oil breather tower, (which is just forward and slightly to the left of the alternator).
Occasionally one comes across a genuine VW re-con motor and these will usually have had the number carefully removed and replaced with a small "VW" stamped logo.
