2.0l Aircooled engine

I am trying to replace the crank shaft seal at the rear of the engine i have stripped it back to just the pully however i can not seem to remove it does any one have any ideas or should i be useing a special tool (already tried 3 arm puller)

I had a similar problem with our 1.9DG engine where I could pull down the rear flap, unscrew the crank centre bolt with my hand,,,, But when it was time to remove the pulley I had to gently ease it off the engine with a small lump hammer and a knocking screwdriver......

A puller would be no use and would only end up buggering the bit where the belt runs.....

Did mine last year. Raised the van on ramps and lowered the engine onto the jack. Gave me enough room to do the deed. Left all tinware etc in place.



Remove the fan cover, 3 fan bolts and remove the fan.(tapping left then right etc.. if i remember)

Remove the center bolt (number 6 in the picture)

Use the 3 pronged puller to remove the fan hub. Was very well on and took more turns than i thought safe!

using a seal extractore remove the old seal.

oil the new one and tap in carefully as no to kink it. I used a large socket about the same diameter to keep it true.


Stick it all back together.

Drive 40 miles and repeat for the seal on the other end of the crank ( may not need this step but i did )
