Ooooo Help, Please

Post by peteabbott »

Searched far and wide for a 1Y to replace my blown KY and finally got one. Now reading the information section on the Brickyard regarding possible engines for transplant and it states that the 1Y engine is a "FLY BY WIRE AND REQUIRES AN ECU" Is this the case as the engine I have bought is on its way to me in Ipswich from VW Warehouse far far away ! ASSUME makes an ASS out of U and ME but if this info is correct then I am worrying that the wrong engine could be on its way as I assumed the 1Y had a mechanical pump and thats that. Did they fit 1Y,s with an ECU ?

Christ Mate,
I owe you a pint or two. I put a request on 24/7 Spares who search breaker yards for you and recieved a quote from VW warehouse (tup t North somewhere) £300 including delivery. Getting desperate as I couldn,t find one down here so I bought it. Take a chance I thought. I asked the bloke
How many miles has it done..........didnt know. What vehicle is it out of..............didn,t know, but he said all their engines are tested with a 90 day guarentee  and come complete. He sounded genuine enough so I will just have to wait and see what I get as its is arriving Tuesday.

Thanks for the replies, it will arrive in 12 hours time and I realise it is a gamble but if it needs work to get it up and running at least I will have something to build on. My KY was in too bad a state to rebuild.......4 cracks in the head, very worn bores and loads of play in the valve guides AND it burnt oil and smoked more than the popes chimney. What a strange hobby we all have :D but I love it. I am going to do a picture diary and put it on here (suggested by my old mate Ringo) Here we go, lets get rolling.

pete, honestly m8 ,its a piece of pee to do.i was worried too but i had no reason to be.the only problems i had was when a trailed oil through the house on my shoes
if ringo is your pal the youll be fine..it was his threads i followed to begin with to see how it all went
did you get a spigot bearing yet?
i kept the gasket off the 1y but when i went to fit the engine the lower bell housing to sump bolts didnt line up so if ya gonna order some bits from b/wks get that rubber gasket so it all goes smoothly
but i wouldnt go for the whole cam belt kit straight away as it might be fubar'd..do that after the engine has proved itself to be a good un,just have a look at the belt before you put it in to see if its ok for a short while

yours...dave

Naaa, I use sugar and washing up liquid and it works really well. Engine didn,t arrive as promised, apparently it is on the back of a lorry somewhere. Not too worried yet....but if it don,t come tomorrow I will cancel the Visa payment.
