coolant leak.
G,day cobbers, i am looking for a bit of HELP. My van has got a coolant leak, i know where it is leaking but i cannot seem to cure the bugger, its on the joint where the rubber hose from the radiator at the joint with the plastic pipe. i have replaced the rubber hose, tried different clips, and even put her in the hands of a main dealer, useless persons
its still leaking after taking back to them a couple of times, so now i am wondering if it is the plastic pipe that is giving me grief, also does this pipe have a metal insert, and is this a common problem?

G,day onc onc,
Have a look at this link........
http://www.gowesty.com/ec_view_category.php?id=79" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
and at... Coolant Pipe Repair Kit *MARCH SPECIAL* (251-121-399KIT).......about half way down.
Or why not go the whole hog and buy....... Stainless Steel Coolant Pipe Set [Germany] (251-121-39).....?
I do not have any first hand knowledge of problems in this area, but seem to have read somewhere that the fittings in the ends of the plastic hoses were made of mild steel and corrode in time. Yes, found the article I had read.. Click on... 'More details'... on the MARCH SPECIAL...then the.. 'click here'....to read our library article on this kit.

Thanks Guys, that Go Westy site looks brilliant, i will prob go for the repair kit, and give that a go. stainless ones look the dogs doodles, but a bit to pricey for little old me,
I am a bit green when it comes to things like this, Hence the stitch up by a main dealer
will also look into brickwerks kits
Hopefully will be able to get the old girl back on the road before Christmas

onc onc
Is there any rust in the metal bit that the rubber goes onto
Any severe rust at this joint will crack the metal and go out of shape the more you tighten the jubilee clip.
Had the same problem with mine a while back. Replaced the metal bits with alloy and the problem was solved.

ps got pics. will post when I find them

Dont forget = use GOOD quality SS clips.

Phredd,
have just looked at your piccies, have you cut a bit of the end of plastic pipe, only mine seem to have a ridge which the rubber hose goes over, i,m guessing you have cut the plastic pipe and inserted a length of alloy pipe and fixed with jubilee clips.
Yes the inserts in mine seem to be a bit on the rusty side, i,m guessing this is my problem, thats a great idea of yours and prob a cheap fix,
Cheers, Onc Onc...

No mate, I have not cut any off. They are as manufactured.
I did have to ream off, from the inside, about 1mm to fit the ally tube in.
To make them go in easier I coated the inside of the plastic pipe and the outside of the ally with Araldite and let it set. The araldite is the brown tint you can see on the tube.

I think you will find that one pipe has a ridge on and the other one dont.
Phredd
ps:- >> just had a look at the spare pipes I have and yes the shortest pipe of the two has the ridges while the other dont.
Hope that helps.

Re: coolant leak.
Road tested mine today after replacing metal pipes with secondhand plastic ones. . so far, so good although I did not think of checking metal inserts for rust. To help get rubber pipe over plastic which have a bigger diameter than the metal ones.I forced a large round screwdriver into rubber pipe for an hour or so to stretch and shape it. . Made starting it a lot easier ! If you have to take pipes on and off it is easier if you take an angle grinder to the hole in the crossmember and turn it into a slot and just lift pipes in. Replace removed metal with a short length of builders galvanised steel bracket stuff complete with holes ready drilled. Only snag I had was that "new" pipes prevented the throw of the rod for reverse so jiggle them around a bit.

Seem to remember something about pipe adaptors/ reducers and their availability in the Coolant/Plastic Pipe Wiki. Keep us updated on your repair. It could/will come to all of us
