mk1 golf/caddy 1.6 diesel wont start! please help (my daily)

Post by Tommy D »

hey all need some help..

my mk1 caddy 1.6 diesel wont GO!

it was idleing but as soo as you touch the the throttle it might rev a little but it would cut out.

i called a mate he said it could be the fuel filter blocked - changed it, with no change! there is fuel in the filter so some fuel is getting through, glow plug light on dash says all in OK, could the fuel pump not be getting enough where it needs to be?

any info would be EXTREMALLY APPRECIATED!!!

cheers tommy

You are gunna have to check for that 'old chestnut' air getting in the fuel system, which is the difference between go and No go on a Diesel....

well when it was running there were bubbles in the pipe, or gaps between the fuel. where are the best places to check?

Guessing you have no obvious leaks? You could always just gravity feed the injection pump straight from can, this will eliminate all the fuel filter and pipe work. If it runs o.k then trace fault back. Only had a very similar prob on mk1 golf diesel when I had changed fuel pipe and only pipe I had got was no good because internal diameter was not large enough to allow enough fuel through to let engine run and rev. Would just about tick over but when rev, cut out. Just a few ideas.
